Hydro Declared Expansion of Remelt Capacity at Swedish Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hydro announced its decision to expand remelt capacity at its Sjunnen extrusion plant in Sweden. The expansion will boost the plant’s aluminum recycling capacity by 50%. The €11.3 million expansion is expected to be completed before the end of next year.

The proposed expansion of the cast house will increase the annual aluminum recycling capacity at the plant from 42,000 tonnes to approximately 62,000 tonnes. The investment is in response to the heightened market demand for low-carbon aluminum products across various industries in which the company operates.

The move is expected to help the company achieve its goal of reducing its overall carbon emissions by 30% by 2030, by way of increasing recycling capacity for aluminum and producing increased volume of low-carbon aluminum products. The expansion will result in increased production of low-carbon alloys such as Hydro RESTORE and Hydro REDUXA.

Commenting on the development, Jonas Bjuhr, Managing Director, Hydro Extrusions Sweden noted that the company’s recycling casthouses play a significant role in the transition towards a greener economy. The expansion will result in enhanced consumption of scrap and end-of-life aluminum from local industries, he added.
