SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): FMCG major Hindustan Unilever (HUL) announced plans to achieve 100% plastic waste collection during the current year. Accordingly, the company aims to collect and process more plastic packaging waste than the amount of plastics used by it.
HUL plans to ensure safe recovery and recycling of over a lakh tonnes of post-consumer plastic waste through an extended producer responsibility (EPR) program. By doing so, the company aims to become the world’s first large-scale FMCG company to achieve plastic waste neutrality. It must be noted that HUL had achieved collection and safe disposal of nearly 60,000 tonnes of plastic waste in 2020.

The company has been leading the implementation of EPR across the country. It operates in nearly 100 towns, in collaboration with various organizations and local governing bodies, to collect plastic waste. These partnerships have not only ensured environmental benefits, but have positively impacted the lives of waste collectors.
Willem Uijen, HUL’s Executive Director Supply Chain noted that the new initiative is part of their commitment towards circular economy. It intends to scale up its joint efforts to collect more plastic packaging waste during the current year, four years ahead of the earlier set deadline of 2025, he added.
