Greenpeace Report Urges Cut in Production to Combat Plastic Pollution

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recently published report by Greenpeace International revealed overwhelming support to cut production so as to combat plastic pollution. It highlighted awareness among people that rising climate change can be addressed only through reduced plastic production.

The report outlines the results of survey carried out among 1,000 people across 17 Malaysian cities by Greenpeace, in partnership with London-headquartered international market research consultancy Censuswide between 16th and 26th February.

The findings of the report have been released just before the scheduled meeting of the 4th Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on formulating a global plastics treaty in Ottawa, Canada next week.

According to Hema Mahadevan, public engagement campaigner for Greenpeace Malaysia, the Malaysians displayed significantly stronger sentiments to combat plastic pollution, when compared with global averages. The industry as well as policymakers must act quickly to scale back plastic production, which will help protect biodiversity, she noted.

The Greenpeace report highlighted that need to reduce production, rather than relying on imposing penalties on use of plastics or resorting to common solutions such as biodegradable plastics.
