SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The African nation of Nigeria plans to introduce a legislation in the National Assembly, aimed at reducing the proliferation of plastic pollution in the country. The announcement regarding this was made during a ceremony held to unveil the newly installed plastic and aluminum recycling bins in the National Assembly.

According to Rep Sam Ifeanyi Onuigbo, a member of House Representatives, the installation of recycling bins in the National Assembly supplements the efforts by Parliamentarians to address climate change and deliver a carbon-free country in future. The symbolic gesture will motivate others to follow suit, he added.

He noted that the legislation alone could not bring about changes. He highlighted the important role that media have to play in making the Nigerian public know about the programme, so that they are embraced by every citizen of the country. The entire exercise will be futile, if they are not properly put in practice, he added.

The proposed legislation will ensure inclusion of a circular economy and climate awareness modules in the education criteria at various levels, which in turn will bring about behavioural changes. The legislation will result in significant reduction in single-use plastic pollution in Nigeria, which has been on the rise during recent times.
