LONDON (Scrap Monster): Swansea Drydocks, which offers environmentally responsible ship recycling services has bagged HMS Cornwall recycling contract.  The contract to scrap and recycle HMS Cornwall was awarded by U.K’s Ministry of Defense.   HMS Cornwall is berthed in Portsmouth and is expected at Swansea Drydocks during the autumn.

Swansea Drydocks Ltd said it had beaten competitors to win the Ministry of Defense contract for HMS Cornwall.  Swansea Drydocks says its relevant experience and technical knowledge along with its capabilities resulted in claiming permits, approvals, and licenses.  Over the years, with expertise knowledge, Swansea Drydocks had the competence to deliver a safe and environmentally sound ship recycling service, the ability to maximise the financial return from the ship’s metals, materials and equipment whilst minimising waste to landfill.

Karl Dunn, managing director of Swansea Drydocks stated that it has been a huge challenge for developing Swansea Drydocks into a world class ship repair and recycling facility.  “It’s taken us several years of hard work and significant investment to be in a position to win this tender. As a result, we are beginning to achieve the goals we set for the business and we anticipate substantial growth over the next few years.”  He added.

HMS Cornwall, a Type 22 frigate was built in 1985 by Yarrow Shipbuilders in Glasgow.  It was commissioned at Falmouth in 1988 by Diana, Princess of Wales, and decommissioned in 2011.  It was decommissioned following a six-month deployment conducting counter-piracy operations east of Suez.   HMS Cornwall is 5,300 tonnes and capable of 30 knots.
