Ghana Advocacy Group Push for Ban on Single-Use Plastics

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Ghana’s leading environmental policy advocacy group, Ghana Youth Environmental Movement (GYEM) has launched a two-day campaign at the Kaneshie Market and Tema Station in Accra.

The first of the two campaigns was held at the Kaneshie Market on Friday, 24th November, 2023. The second event was held the next day at the Tema Station. Both the events witnessed active participation by market vendors as well as drivers. Clean-up exercises were held at both the locations, as part of the campaign.

According to Samuel Boadu Duah, Campaign Lead, GYEM, the primary objective of the campaign is to raise awareness about the harmful environmental impacts of single-use plastics and promote use of sustainable alternatives. The single-use plastics pose serious threats to biodiversity and public health. He called upon citizens to correct their wrong practices.

The campaign promotes the use of alternatives such as bags made of old fabrics and clothes as replacement for single-use plastic bags such as polythene bags. Apart from being cheap, such bags will help provide job opportunities for unemployed youth of the country, Duah noted.

It must be noted that the country’s government had recently imposed taxes on certain plastic products.
