SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): General Iron Industries, Inc. has reached an agreement with the City of Chicago on relocation of its existing shredder facility at at 1909 North Clifton Ave. to the south side of the city.

The new agreement will ensure that the company meets all applicable environmental regulations and operating requirements, as specified in the current permit. Apart from increasing the transparency for the community and other stakeholders with regards to its operations, the agreement also lays out clear timeline for the eventual relocation of the facility, by winding down operations at its north side facility. As per the new agreement, the current site will be relocated to a new and expanded metal recycling plant by 2021.

The additional requirements specified by the new agreement calls for cessation of all metal recycling operations at the existing plant by Dec 31, 2020. A signage must be posted at the plant's entrances at least one month prior to stoppage of operations, in order to inform public about the closure. In addition, the company needs to provide traffic control to mitigate congestion during rush hours, so as to ensure smooth operation of nearby businesses.

Recently, General Iron Industries, Inc. had installed a new $2 million regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO), aimed at regulating uncontrolled volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, as part of its efforts to bolster environmental practices and facility features.

The proposed new plant will feature new environmental features including enclosed auto shredder operations.
