SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A lawsuit filed last week in Allen County Superior Court threatens to halt proposed metal recycling facility by leading global metals recycler. It must be noted that Exurban had earlier announced plans to invest up to $300 million in the facility at Southeast Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The lawsuit seeks to overturn the approval by the Fort Wayne Plan Commission, citing that it does not meet the regulatory standards for recycling plants in Fort Wayne’s city code. The proposed plant has been facing stiff opposition from various environmental groups in the area, including The Citizens of Environmental Equity (CEE) of Southeast Fort Wayne. In fact, the CEE had held a meeting Monday to voice its concerns over the plant.

Meantime, Exurban, in response to the allegations in the lawsuit, said that it is committed to build the plant in that area. It would be a zero-waste metals recycling facility, primarily for electronic scrap metals. Furthermore, it would employ a unique process to turn e-metals into valuable products. The lawsuit lacks merit and the company is hopeful of resolving the issue in a timely manner, said Wes Adams, co-founder, Exurban.
Fort Wayne’s Redevelopment Commission had approved agreement for sale of the 76-acre land parcel at Adams Center Road and Paulding Road towards setting up the facility.
