Foreign Nationals Arrested at Airport for Alleged Smuggling of Gold

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Indian Customs Department arrested several foreign national in connection with smuggling gold through one of the busiest airports in the country. The arrests were reported Saturday evening at the Bengaluru International Airport. The accused were trying to smuggle gold by hiding them in their bodies.

According to Customs officials, the arrested people, comprising two men and eight women, have been identified as Sri Lankan citizens. The carriers travelled from the Bandaranaike International Airport in Sri Lanka to the Indian airport via SriLankan Airlines Flight UL 171. The liquid gold concealed in rectum, were supposed to be handed over to a person in Bengaluru. The recovered gold was valued over INR 1 crore.

They were intercepted by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) and Customs officials while trying to make their exit through the immigration bay. As per reports, further investigations are on to unveil the entire gang behind the smuggling act, including the overseas links.

In another incident, a Taiwanese national was arrested along with a suspect from China and two others from South Korea for smuggling nearly 85.5 kilograms of gold, hidden in air cargo shipment from Hong Kong.
