Finished Steel Import Market Share at 16%: AISI

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which signals substantial decline in steel import permit applications in the month of January this year.

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.126 million net tons in January 2021. This is marginally lower by 0.1% when matched with 2.128 million net tons permit tons recorded in the prior month. When compared with December 2020 preliminary imports of 1.494 million net tons, the January 2021 steel import permit tonnage was up by approximately 42.4%, AISI data said.

In January 2021, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.202 million net tons, down by 10.3% from the preliminary imports total of 1.340 million net tons in the month of December last year. The estimated finished steel import market share in January was 16%.

Heavy structural shapes reported largest increase in January permits over the prior month, surging higher by 105%, followed by reinforcing bars and light shapes bars, whose exports were up by 82% and 23% month-on-month respectively.

In January, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for South Korea (125,000 NT), followed by Turkey (75,000 NT), Japan (52,000 NT), Brazil (40,000 NT) and Taiwan (30,000 NT).
