SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The trade data by various countries point to mixed trends in ferrous scrap imports and exports during the month of February this year.

The statistics published by the General Department of Vietnam Customs indicate that the country’s scrap imports totalled around 482,600 tons in February this year, significantly higher by 126% over the prior month. The import volumes of scrap from the U.S. skyrocketed by 226%, whereas those from Japan were up by 70% compared to the previous month.

The cumulative scrap imports by the country in the initial two-month period of the year surged higher by 32% to 682,400 tons.

According to statistics published by Taiwan Customs, the country’s scrap imports edged higher by 23% month-on-month to around 233,000 tons. The largest source of imports was the U.S., which supplied around 97,900 tons, higher by 20% over the previous month. The other major scrap suppliers to the country were Japan (63,700 tons), Australia (18,100 tons) and the Dominican Republic (15,000 tons).

Meantime, Brazil’s scrap imports totalled around 810 tons during the month, falling by 79% month-on-month. On the contrary, scrap exports by the country were up by 57% from the prior month to total around 59,000 tons in February 2023.
