Exports of Aluminum Waste and Scrap by the US Soared 22%

The top five Customs districts from which the exports left the US were Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, Seattle and Norfolk.

Exports of Aluminum Waste and Scrap by the US Soared 22%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to latest US Census Bureau data, the exports of Aluminum waste and scrap by the US surpassed $2 billion by November this year. The exports during the first eleven months of the previous year surged higher by 22%, upon comparison with the previous year.

The exports totaled $2.03 billion through November 2017, s compared with $1.67 billion during the year before. The exports during this period have already outclassed the full year exports of $1.81 billion recorded in 2016.

The primary destination of US aluminum waste and scrap exports was China. The exports to that country totaled $1.06 billion, accounting for more than 50% of the total US exports. The US exports to China surged higher by nearly 27% year-on-year. In second place was South Korea with imports worth $217.5 million. The third largest importer was Canada. The exports to that country dropped marginally to total $184.3 million. The other key export markets were Mexico ($158.6 million) and India ($99.7 million).

The combined imports by the above five countries totaled 85% of total American exports. The shipments to these countries amounted to $1.72 billion.

The top five Customs districts from which the exports left the US were Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, Seattle and Norfolk.

Meantime, imports of aluminum waste and scrap too recorded significant increase during the first eleven months of 2017. The imports were up sharply by 33% from $698.45 million in Jan-Nov ’16 to $929.59 million through the first eleven months of 2017. It must be noted that the full year imports in 2016 had totaled only $768.14 million.

Canada was the leading supplier of aluminum waste and scrap to the US. The imports from that country totaled $526.4 million, accounting for nearly 57% of the total US imports. The Canadian exports to the US were up by more than 19% during the eleven-month period. The imports from Mexico totaled $226 million. The other major exporters were Guatemala ($17.4 million), Venezuela ($17 million) and Saudi Arabia ($15.9 million). These five countries together accounted for 86% of total imports of aluminum waste and scrap during Jan-Nov ’17.

Detroit, Laredo, Ogdensburg, Buffalo and Pembina, N.D. were the top five Customs districts through which the imports entered the US.
