SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Officials and industry experts have urged Bangladesh administration to introduce mandatory recycling targets in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). They contend that enforcing a law requiring a set proportion of packaging to be made of recycled plastic will also assist the nation in lowering its reliance on virgin plastic and reducing its use of plastic. It will also result in cheaper import costs.

Representatives of the industry pointed out that the nation could only achieve these goals with a large investment in cutting-edge recycling technology and infrastructure, for which the sector could need hefty government subsidies. They also emphasized the necessity of raising public awareness in order to address the growing problem of plastic trash.

According to World Bank estimates, the amount of plastic consumed annually per person in Bangladesh's urban areas increased by about three times between 2005 and 2020. Additionally, just 31% of the nation's 2020 plastic consumption was recycled.
