Europe’s First Infinite Loop Recycling Facility to Handle PET

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Quebec-headquartered Loop Industries announced new partnership with Paris-based Suez to build Europe’s first Infinite Loop recycling facility. The recycling facility will be dedicated to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic. The site selection and engineering is expected to be completed by mid-2021. The facility is expected to be commissioned in 2023.

According to a joint press release, the facility will make use of depolymerisation technique to process end-of-life plastics to produce virgin-quality food-grade plastics. The products from the plant will cater to the rising demand from beverage and consumer packaged goods companies in the region.

The new facility is expected to produce the equivalent of nearly 4.2 billion food-grade beverage bottles. The production process is estimated to lead to carbon dioxide savings of around 180,000 tons per annum, as compared with the traditional petrochemical process used to produce virgin PET.

The European countries consume approximately 5.5 million tons of PET every year, out of which only 7% is recycled to manufacture new bottles. The new partnership will boost transition to a circular economy, especially at a time when the region is seen committed to high recycled content in products and packaging.
