SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Jamaicans are being urged to dispose of electronic waste (e-waste) through approved recycling channels, instead of discarding the items in regular household garbage.
Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), Audley Gordon, made the appeal during a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Think Tank, in Kingston, recently.
He cautioned that e-waste contains hazardous substances that can pose serious environmental risks and may lead to illness or even death, if not handled properly.
“Once you have a phone, or whatever, and it is no longer fit for purpose, please put it away safely and call us or make arrangements for a registered licensed handler of e-waste to come and get it,” he advised.
Currently, the NSWMA is partnering with INET Jamaica Limited to collect, store and recycle electronic waste across the island, with the aim of improving Jamaica’s recycling practices.
For his part, Chief Executive Officer of INET Jamaica Limited, Kirk-Lyle Hall, said the company has been engaged in electronic-waste collection for approximately 15 years.
He is encouraging businesses that generate electronic waste to contact the company to arrange proper collection and disposal.
“If you’re a company, you can give us a call, and we will assess what you have. We will take a list of the items and make arrangements for collection,” he explained.
Homeowners are also being encouraged to take advantage of designated drop-off locations for electronic waste. Individuals can also visit the company’s website for information on available collection sites and contacts for disposal services.
Mr. Hall emphasised that greater public participation will be essential in improving Jamaica’s recycling rate for electronic waste.
“Please do not keep your waste at home and do not throw it in the garbage. Contact us, no matter how small it is, because we have some form of collection facility available,” he urged.
