E-Recyclers' Industry Body Calls for E-Scrap Export Ban

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Coalition for American Electronics Recycling (CAER) called upon the U.S. Congress to act upon the legislation to limit exports of untested used devices.

The industry group welcomed the recent move by the U.S. administration to curb the movement of counterfeit electronic goods into the U.S. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection had recently announced a new initiative by which e-commerce companies will have to face hefty fines for not combating counterfeit goods sales. Although the measures are sure to deliver big progress in the country’s fight against fake goods, the Congress passage of the Secure E-Waste Export and Recycling Act (SEERA) is essential to address certain counterfeiting processes, it said.

According to CAER, the legislation could put strict controls on the ability of domestic electronics recycling companies in the U.S. It would render exports of end-of-life devices except those of tested and functional devices and recalled devices sent for repairs as illegal. The legislation could effectively check the follow of counterfeit microchips from China into the U.S., CAER noted.
