Dunkirk Steelworks Reinforced Decarbonisation Plans

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Bruno Le Maire, the French Minister for Economy and Finance visited ArcelorMittal’s Dunkirk Steelworks. The Minister was welcomed by Eric Niedziela, Chairman, ArcelorMittal France and members of the top executive management team. The visit reinforced the support of the French government to the plant’s decarbonisation plans.

During his visit, the Minister was updated on the decarbonisation plans which are implemented with funding support from the French government. Furthermore, the progress at the French steelmaking operations were demonstrated.

The company plans to build a 2.5 million tonne direct reduced iron furnace and two electric arc furnaces in Dunkirk. The new facilities will completely replace one of the two existing blast furnaces. ArcelorMittal intends to reduce the carbon intensity of its European steel production by 35% by 2030.

The project is currently in the front-end engineering design (FEED) stage, the completion of which is expected later this year. Following this, the industrial layout, the implementation schedule and the final budget will be determined, which in turn will confirm the viability of the project.
