SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The European packaging major DS Smith announced that it is currently developing an anti-microbial coating, aimed at offering additional safeguards to customers from virus.
According to company press release, it has partnered with Touchguard to develop a new range of virus-safeguarded sustainable cardboard packaging solutions across its European and North American operations. The anti-viral and anti-bacterial packaging offers an additional layer of protection to consumers and workers throughout the supply chain.

There has been no evidence of virus transfer from cardboards. However, there still exists fear among consumers, which is evident from the fact that six out of ten consumers tend to wash their hands after coming into contact with such packages. Studies found that nearly 57% of people wash their hands thoroughly after touching e-commerce packaged products. Also, packaging hygiene is expected to remain as a top priority in the years to come.
The new technology will be effective across a wide range of viruses and bacteria including envelope viruses.
Commenting on the development, Alan Potts, Design and Innovation Director for DS Smith said that the technology has the potential to bring a real and proven additional layer of protection to its customers. More importantly, it maintains the sustainability of its products and is 100% recyclable, he added.
