DS Smith Partnership to Boost Closed-Loop Recycling System

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  London, UK-based packaging major DS Smith announced partnership with online wine merchant Laithwaite’s Wine to promote closed-loop recycling system across supply chains.

The cardboard cases from Laithwaite’s distribution center in Gloucester, U.K of imported wine from across the world, will be collected and transported to DS Smith Kemsley, U.K paper mill. This will be recycled into new packaging material and sent to DS Smith Packaging in Launceston, U.K., where they will be used to manufacture new cardboard cases. These cases will in turn be supplied to Laithwaite to be used for e-commerce distribution across the UK.

Andrew Hawker, head of logistics at Laithwaite’s Wine said that the company is delighted to keeps its cardboard for recycling through its partnership with DS Smith. The partnership will help in giving a new lease of life to its recycling, he added. Meantime, Tom Campbell-White, European strategic development director at DS Smith noted that Laithwaite’s was one of its first customers to be awarded Closed-Loop Certification.

The two companies have also partnered on a project to increase the performance of the cardboard boxes and eliminate the use of plastics.
