SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): DS Smith delivered optimized packaging solution for a spare part, which has helped the car manufacturer save over €450,000 per year in terms of material and logistics costs. The redesigned packaging was created when the car manufacturer decided to launch a new retractable luggage cover.
The old packaging was complex in design and time-consuming as it used main carton along with three cardboard inserts to hold and protect the product. DS Smith, in co-operation with the company, presented several design options. The finally accepted solution uses corrugated cardboard with integrated inserts in place of loose ones.

According to the company, the reduction in overall packaging dimensions delivers improved truck and container utilization as well as warehouse space savings. The old packaging could fit only 21 products on a single pallet. However, the smaller dimensions of the new packaging help to fit 24 products into one pallet. By doing so, it has resulted in reducing transportation costs by more than one-third, it noted.
Nearly 35% fewer trucks and 37% fewer sea containers are required per year, thus resulting in significant costs savings. Along with financial savings, the new packaging also leads to significant reduction in carbon footprint.
