Drax to Build New Satellite Pellet Plant in Arkansas

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Drax Group announced plans to begin construction of new satellite pellet plant in Arkansas. This will be the first of three such plants to be constructed by the company, as announced earlier.

According to company announcement, the construction of the first plant adjacent to a West Fraser sawmill in Leola, Grant County, will begin later this month. The commissioning is scheduled in October this year. The plant is expected to produce nearly 40,000 metric tons of sustainable biomass pellets per annum, by making use of by-products including sawdust and other dry residual materials from the West Fraser sawmill facility. Together, the three plants are expected to produce nearly 120,000 metric tons of sustainable biomass pellets per annum, it said.

Also, the construction of the other two pellet plants is expected to begin in the forthcoming months. The three projects will see an investment of approximately $40 million, which in turn will lead to creation of nearly 30 direct jobs and many more indirect jobs across communities.

The construction of the three satellite pellet plants is part of the company’s strategy to boost biomass supply to 5 million tons by 2027.

The investment highlights Arkansas’ rising role in combating climate change, noted Will Gardiner, Group CEO, Drax.
