Dow's Nigerian Alliance to Focus on Plastics Circularity

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Dow has partnered with Norwegian company Empower to launch a new study that will focus on the feasibility of advancing a circular economy for plastics in Nigeria. The study will be partly funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).

The new study is part of the ongoing partnership between the two companies aimed at curbing plastic waste pollution in the West African region. The two companies have been working together in Nigeria since last year, focusing on collection and sorting of plastic water sachets.

Dow, in alliance with Omnik, had launched a water sachet recycling program in the country last year.  The program aims to recycle more than 300 million sachets, which would otherwise pose threat to environment. So far, it has recovered almost 600 metric tons of plastic. The findings of the new study will help to scale up the project.

The new study will help to assess the feasibility and traceability of plastics waste using Empower’s blockchain technology. It will implement a scalable digital waste collection and recycling business model in Lagos, Nigeria. The ultimate aim is to create a disruptive and circular global plastic waste ecosystem.
