Domtar Announces Important Update on Kingsport Mill Conversion

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Domtar Corporation announced major step forward in the conversion of its Kingsport, Tennessee paper mill into containerboard facility.

In a news release, the company announced that it has entered into agreement with The Voith Group towards supply of equipment and technical services. The Germany-headquartered equipment supplier will help Domtar in building one of the most modern recycled containerboard machines in the world. The state-of-the-art machine is expected to set new industry benchmarks, it said.

Earlier in August this year, the company had signed an agreement with Voith towards supply of a complete recycled stock preparation system for the Kingsport mill, aimed at maximizing efficiency and quality of the proposed containerboard facility.

Domtar expects to complete the mill’s conversion in 2022. Upon completion of the project, the mill will become the second-largest recycled containerboard mill in North America, producing approximately 600,000 tons of high-quality recycled linerboard and corrugated medium every year. The mill will source recycled paper materials from suppliers and turn them into pulp for making the cardboard materials. The outer linerboard and inner corrugated medium produced at the mill will be sold to box makers.
