Crude Steel Production by African Region Tapered

Egypt, the largest regional steel producer reported reduced output during the year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The crude steel production by African region recorded modest decline during the previous year. Also, the production reported sharp decline in December 2019.

According to data published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), the African region recorded yearly production of 13.530 million tonnes (Mt) in 2019, down by 6.9% from 14.530 Mt in 2018.

Egypt, the largest regional steel producer reported reduced output during the year. The Egyptian crude steel output totalled 7.257 Mt. The country’s output dropped by 7.0% over the previous year. South Africa continued to be the second largest producer in the region, with an output totalling 5.666 Mt. The country reported 10.4% year-on-year decline in output over the previous year. On the contrary, Libyan output surged higher by almost 53% from 396,000 tonnes to 606,000 tonnes.

The production by African countries slumped by over 21% in December 2019, led by South Africa, whose production recorded 37% year-on-year decline. The Egyptian output dropped by 14.3%, whereas Libya saw 15% surge in production. The regional output totalled 904,000 tonnes in December last year.
