Connecticut Scrap LLC To Pay $16K Fine in EPA Settlement

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Connecticut Scrap, LLC and five related scrap metal companies in Connecticut and Rhode Island have reached settlement with the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) on air pollution violations. As per the agreement, the companies have agreed to pay a total penalty of $160,000 and take necessary steps to comply with the Clean Air Act (CAA).

The EPA had alleged that the company had failed to comply with air pollution standards for large stationary diesel engines. In addition, they also failed to comply with federal standards designed to protect the stratospheric ozone layer.

As part of compliance, Connecticut Scrap took the diesel engine out of service and connected to the electric power grid. Removing the engine and switching to grid power resulted in reduction of emissions. Also, the company stated that it now complies fully with the regulations designed to limit releases of chemicals such as refrigerants that cause damage to the earth’s ozone layer.

Dennis Deziel, EPA New England Regional Administrator commended the companies for their cooperation in correcting the issues raised during the case. The Agency is committed to protect public health and clean air by ensuring compliance with laws and regulations that limit pollution from diesel engines, he added.
