Commercial Metals Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art Metal Recycling Plant in Eastern Panhandle

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Construction is set to begin on a new facility in Berkeley County, West Virginia, which will specialize in converting steel and metal scrap into useful products. Texas-based Commercial Metals Company held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new metals recycling plant in Martinsburg, which will focus on rebar production.

Berkeley County Commissioners attended the event and expressed optimism about the economic benefits the facility will bring to the area. Commission President Jim Whitacre highlighted the job creation potential, stating that the company will initially provide 230 jobs and emphasized the importance of the partnership. Commissioner Eddie Gochenour pointed out that the new facility’s advantageous location near the I-81 corridor offers shipping opportunities and expands the county’s tax base while diversifying the workforce.

Despite being the fastest-growing county in the state, Gochenour acknowledged that there are still challenges to address, such as improving highway infrastructure, upgrading the water district, and creating additional space in schools.

In December 2022, Governor Jim Justice announced the state’s commitment of $75 million to the project, which is projected to open in late 2025.
