Coca-Cola Declares Chinese JV to Boost Plastics Recycling

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Bottled beverages leader Coca-Cola has announced partnership with JD.com- a Chinese e-commerce and logistics business to boost plastic recycling in China. The partnership was initially announced during the World Economic Forum 2020 held recently in Davos, Switzerland.

The two partnering companies had carried out a two-week pilot project in Shanghai last month. The project involved collection of used bottles by JD.com’s courier team members, while delivering packages to customers. As many as 50,000 households participated in the pilot. The bottles thus collected were sent to certified recycling facilities in partnership with Coca-Cola. Meantime, the companies announced that they are looking forward to expand the partnership into more Chinese cities.

James Quincey, Chairman and CEO, Coca-Cola noted that the initiative is in line with the company’s ‘World Without Waste’ initiative, which primarily focuses on working with partners in solving the packaging waste problem. Meantime, JD Logistics CEO Zhenhui Wang noted that the partnership with Coca-Cola will help in creating a reverse logistics system.
