SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A coalition of non-profit organizations has announced the launch of a new campaign, aimed at encouraging automakers to switch to low-carbon steel. The ‘Race to Green Steel’ campaign urges automakers to increasingly make use of green steel in their vehicles.
The campaign will build on earlier attempts by the automakers to promote the use of green steel in their manufacturing process. It must be noted that several major automakers have committed to reduce supply chain emissions by incorporating innovative low-carbon products. For instance, Ford and GM have already entered into low-carbon steel supply contracts. Other automobile majors including Mercedez-Benz and Volvo too have signed agreements towards purchase of green steel products.

The coalition urged automakers to assess the environmental impacts of steel products used today and commit to purchase at least 10% near-zero steel by 2030. Furthermore, it called upon automakers to join the coalition and its efforts, so as to achieve 100% fossil-free green steel by 2050. The procurement of low-emissions steel today will lay the groundwork for green steel tomorrow, it noted.
The campaign is jointly organized by Climate Group (#SteelZero), Industrious Labs, CALSTART Green Steel Program and The International Council on Clean Transportation.
