CIS Crude Steel Output Surged, Mainly Driven by Russia

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly production data published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests notable surge in crude steel output by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region during the month of December 2020. The regional output reported jump of 3.1% when matched with the previous year. The output totalled 8.696 million tonnes (Mt), compared with 8.438 Mt during the same month a year before.

The leading steel producer in the region was Russia. The Russian output totalled 6.110 Mt, marginally lower by 0.8% from 6.159 Mt in December 2019. Meantime, the output by Ukraine recorded substantial increase by 22.1% over the year from 1.561 Mt to 1.906 Mt. Kazakhstan, the third largest regional steel producer, saw its output drop by almost 5% year-on-year to 355,000 tonnes. The monthly crude steel output by other countries in the region is as follows: Byelorussia (205,000 tonnes), Uzbekistan (80,000 tonnes) and Moldova (45,000 tonnes).

The cumulative crude steel output during the full year 2020 totalled 101.756 Mt, which is marginally higher by 1.5% over the previous year. The crude steel production by the region had totalled 100.236 Mt in 2019.  The jump in output by Uzbekistan, Moldova and Russia were almost nullified by production declines in other countries.

The top steel producers in the C.I.S region in 2020 were Russia (73.400 Mt), Ukraine (20.616 Mt) and Kazakhstan (3.835 Mt).
