African Countries' Crude Steel Output Surged 46%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The African crude steel production recorded significant surge during December 2020. However, the output during the full year 2020 ended significantly lower when compared with 2019.

The crude steel production data released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) indicates that African production totalled 1.359 million tonnes (Mt) in Dec ‘20, considerably higher by 45.5% when matched with the previous year. The regional production had totalled only 934,000t in the same month a year before.

World Crude Steel Output Ended 2020 on a Strong Note

All countries in the region except South Africa recorded increased production during the month. Egypt continued to remain as the largest steel producer in the region, producing 994,000 tonnes of crude steel. The Egyptian production accounted for more than 73% of the total regional production. The country’s monthly steel output surged higher by almost 73% over the previous year. The second largest producer- South Africa reported 1.5% year-on-year decline in output from 297,000 tonnes to 292,000 tonnes. Meantime, Libyan output totalled 73,000 tonnes during the month.

The cumulative output by the African region during the full-year 2020 totalled 12.600 Mt, significantly lower by 10.1% when compared with the output of 14.015 Mt during the year before that. The cumulative output by various countries is as follows: Egypt (8.229 Mt), South Africa (3.877 Mt) and Libya (495,000 tonnes).
