Century Aluminum Announces Major Expansion at Kentucky Smelter Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Century Aluminum Company announced two major expansion programs at its Sebree, Kentucky smelter. The expansion aims significant boost to billet production capacity and introduction of additional scrap reprocessing capacity of the smelter. The expansion programs are expected to be completed by Q1 next year.

Further to completion of the expansion programs, nearly 90,000 MT of additional billet production will be added to Sebree casthouse. In addition, the addition of nearly 20,000 MT of additional secondary capacity will result in overall increase in the smelter’s overall processing capabilities. The company expects Sebree smelter to produce approximately 230,000 MT of aluminum products, including 175,000 MT of billets.

Michael A. Bless, President and Chief Executive Officer noted that the new expansion plans demonstrates the company’s confidence in the future of U.S. aluminum industry. Further, he commended the hardwork of its excellent employees, which has prompted the company to invest in the major expansion project. The expansion will result in creation of at least 50 new jobs, he added.

As per sources, the 150,000 MT restart of the company’s Hawesville smelter is nearing completion. Earlier in August, Century Aluminum had held ceremonial reopening of first of three production lines at the smelter. The technology improvement programs at Hawesville and Sebree smelters are aimed at ensuring continued competitiveness in the future.
