Butte County, CA Approves Long-Term Master Plan for Landfill

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): Butte County’s landfill is slated to get a major expansion. The county Board of Supervisors approved a long-term master plan for the Neal Road Recycling and Waste Facility. Public Works director Josh Pack says the county is within several years of exhausting all available space at the facility and now it’s time to expand.

“The adoption of this master plan is a lot more than this new project. We have a lot of things that have changed over the years, everything from legislation from California through the way we process and recycle materials, the way we try to divert materials away from landfills, the need to be good stewards, not only of our community but the environment in which we work in,” he said.

According to a county staff report, upgrades could include a public drop-off area, reuse area, and self-haul facility. Pack says the county has some of the lowest tipping fees in the state. “We heard loud and clear from the board and the community that we want to continue to keep rates low and as accessible as possible,” he said. “The improvements that we’ll build out of the master plan over the next six to ten years are with that goal in mind.”
