SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Jewellers in India could sell only hallmarked jewellery, irrespective of its purity, beginning June 1, 2022. That he BIS announcement says that every gold jewellery item must be mandatorily hallmarked. The jewellers will be allowed to charge INR 35 per gold item as hallmarking charge.
Until now, gold hallmarking was mandatory for only six purity categories- 14 carat, 18 carat, 20 carat, 22 carat, 23 carat and 24 carat. Thus a jeweller had the option to sell other purity gold articles without hallmarking them. However, effective June 1, 2022, this rule will change. Hereafter, all gold jewellery, irrespective of their cartage, must be hallmarked before they are sold to customers.

The BIS hallmarking on gold articles ensures that the items bought by the customers possess the same purity as mentioned in the hallmark logo. By way of enforcing the new rule, the gold industry will see more trust in the customers to purchase gold.
The latest government notification mentions revisions to signs of purity on gold jewellery. The hallmarked jewellery will now comprise of three signs-BIS logo, Purity/Fineness grade and a six-digit alphanumeric code.
Meantime, some items are being excluded from mandatory hallmarking. These include gold articles weighing less than 2 grams, any article of gold thread, gold bullion etc.
