Befesa Metal Recycled Volumes Witnessed Notable Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Luxembourg-based recycler of metal byproducts, Befesa, reported significant boost in recycling activity during 2021. The recently published Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) Report for 2021 by the company states that it was able to reduce the landfilling of metals-containing dusts and residues by recycling more than 2 million metric tons of material during the previous year.

The acquisition of American Zinc Recycling increased Befesa’s capacity for steel dust recycling by more than 600 thousand tonnes. The two new plants in China will contribute by more than 200 thousand tonnes to Befesa’s total recycling capacity. The notable surge in recycled volumes were , supported by the first-time consolidation of American Zinc Recycling in August 2021.

According to the report, steel dust recycling volumes grew by 28.9% to 885,724 tonnes in 2021, compared with 687,000 tonnes in 2020. Befesa recycled 1.6 million tonnes of hazardous waste and residues in 2021 and recovered 1.4 million tonnes of new materials, thus reducing the consumption of primary natural resources.

The company continues to invest in improving its technology and operations even further, which is expected to result in more volumes of recycled metal volumes in the coming years, the report said.
