City leaders believe the new facility fills a gap in Beaumont’s recycling infrastructure.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A new recycling facility is set to open in Beaumont by the end of June, giving residents and businesses the opportunity to exchange scrap metals for cash while contributing to environmental sustainability.
Beaumont Recycling will initially accept only metal materials but plans to expand to plastics and glass in the near future. Operations Director Husain Dadbhoy said the center is a better alternative to landfills when it comes to disposing of scrap metals and appliances.
“Anybody can just come by, sell their material, or just even drop it off,” Dadabhoy said.
Located at 565 Orange Ave in Beaumont, the facility aims to provide a convenient recycling option during what city officials describe as a period of economic growth.
“I think it's beneficial because it's right by downtown,” said Beaumont City Councilman AJ Turner. “It's a win-win for the city, and I think it's going to be extremely beneficial. We get the property taxes, but we get to beautify our city.”
Metals accepted at the site include steel, aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel, and household items like spoons and appliances. The collected materials will be transported to Port Arthur for processing and melting, before being sent to global smelters in regions such as Asia and Mexico.
“All the products that are dropped off eventually make it back into the furnace to make new material of the same kind,” Dadabhoy explained.
The drop-off process is designed for efficiency. Visitors will weigh their materials on a drive-thru scale, receive a ticket, and then cash out based on the material's value.
“The processing facility will process it, will mechanically separate materials, sort them out, and then sell it,” Dadabhoy said.
While the site will not accept propane tanks or other pressurized cylinders, it does offer pickup services for recyclable materials from homes. However, Dadabhoy clarified that this service does not include compensation.
City leaders believe the new facility fills a gap in Beaumont’s recycling infrastructure.
“There’s a lack of recycling facilities in Beaumont,” Turner said. “This site will do more than just help the environment.”
Beaumont Recycling is expected to begin operations before the end of June.
