SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The annual conference organized by the Federal Association of German Steel Recycling and Disposal Companies e. V. (BDSV) held discussions on various topics including general economic conditions in steel recycling industry as well as the consequences on account of revision of the EU shipment regulations. The event, originally planned as face-to-face event, was held digitally, on account of ongoing Covid-19 pandemic threat.

BDSV Urges Prioritization of Scrap Metal Recycling Sector
The industry survey carried out by BDSV states that 40% of the companies fear further business deterioration in 2022, whereas 14% expect an improvement. The industry body highlighted high energy costs and supply bottlenecks as the main factors that impede business growth.
Also, BDSV highlights that revision of the EU Waste Shipment Regulation will result in trade barriers. For over 20 million tonnes of steel scrap, which are currently exported from the EU region to third countries, the region will require to expand capacities and implement drastic changes in manufacturing processes.
The anticipated rise in steel production will lead to correspondingly higher demand for scrap, BDSV said.
