SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The waste battery collection rates in the UK totaled around 32% by Q3 this year, falling short of the 2018 target of 45%. This is in accordance with the summary of portable batteries data for the 2018 compliance period as at end-November, published by the National Packaging Waste Database.
According to figures, the number of portable batteries placed on the UK market in 2018 to date by various compliance scheme members totaled 25,278 tonnes. When compared with prior quarters, the tonnage has grown significantly.

The tonnage of waste portable batteries collected in the UK to date this year amounted to 11,742 tonnes, out of which 11,541 tonnes were delivered for treatment. Also, the total tonnage of waste portable batteries evidence notes accepted till date this year totaled 11,943 tonnes.
Robbie Staniforth, policy manager at Ecosurety recycling compliance scheme highlighted the sharp increase in collection level for mixed household batteries in Q3. The country is likely to report another period of high collection in Q4, Staniforth added.
Meantime, he expressed concerns over low WEEE collections during the year. The latest data released by the UK Environment Agency suggests that household and non-household WEEE collections totaled 126,000 tonnes and 2,100 tonnes respectively. The cumulative collection during Jan-Sep ’18 totaled 378,200 tonnes and 6,000 tonnes respectively.
