Barrick Gold North Mara Gold Mine Sued Over Alleged Abuses

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Canadian miner Barrick Gold Corporation has been sued by neighbouring villagers over alleged abuses at the company’s North Mara gold mine in northwestern Tanzania. The lawsuit, filed in the Superior Court of Justice in Ontario, Canada, accuses the miner in being responsible for police killings, torture and other human rights abuses.

The lawsuit has been filed by 21 Tanzanian villagers, who belong to the Indigenous Kurya community. Nine of them are themselves beaten or shot by the police. Others are relatives of villagers killed by Tanzanian policemen on duty at the mine.

According to the lawsuit, the residents entering the mine premises had to face violent responses from police. It noted that it was a routine practice for the residents to enter waste rock areas at the mine property to retrieve rocks with trace amounts of gold, which are processed and sold by them. It alleged that the company had effective and practical control over Tanzanian police engaged to guard the mine.

Meantime, Barrick Gold stated that it has received a copy of the lawsuit and that it “is riddled with inaccuracies”. It refuted the charges, saying that it does not exercise any sort of control or direction over the Tanzanian police.
