Aurubis to Build New Nickel and Copper Recycling Facility in Belgium

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hamburg, Germany-headquartered Aurubis, the world’s leading copper recycler, announced strategic project to boost recycling capacity for nickel and copper. The proposed facility is expected to become fully operational in fiscal year 2025-’26.

The company announced investment of Euro 70 million at its Olen, Belgium site towards construction of a state-of-the-art and energy-efficient bleed treatment facility. The plant will employ hydrometallurgical process to recover valuable metals such as nickel and copper contained in electrolyte streams.

The project is considered as an important addition to the Belgian production cluster to extract nickel and copper from material flows and remove impurities from the bleed. The Aurubis smelter network comprises of bleed treatment facilities at Hamburg, Lunen in Germany and Pirdop in Bulgaria. The additional facility will optimize material flow, thus making its operations more efficient.

Heiko Arnold, Chief Operating Officer, Aurubis noted that the new facility in Belgium demonstrates how Aurubis realizes synergies in its smelter network and contributes significantly to the European circular economy.
