SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AM/NS) India joint venture announced that it has commenced operations at the Ghoraburhani-Sagasahi iron ore mine in Sundargarh district, Odisha.

The iron ore mine block, spread over nearly 140 acres, is estimated to contain resources of around 98.61 million tonnes. The company expects the mine to produce approximately 2 million tonnes of high-quality iron ore during the current year. The iron ore from the mine will be transported to the beneficiation plant in Dabuna, from where it will be fed to the Paradeep pellet plant. It plans to ramp up the production to the rated capacity of 7.16 million tonnes over the forthcoming years, said the company press release.

Commenting on the development, Dilip Oommen, Chief Executive Officer, AM/NS India said that the commencement of operations will further strengthen the company’s raw material self-sufficiency efforts. It will help the state of Odisha to achieve the target of one-trillion dollar economy.

Earlier during the month, AM/NS India had commissioned another pellet plant in Odisha, thereby doubling capacity at Paradeep complex to 12 million tonnes. The company plans to boost its steelmaking capacity to 30 million tonnes.
