ArcelorMittal Declared Steel Sustainability Champion for 2017

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has announced the winners of the 2017 Steel Sustainability Championship. ArcelorMittal is one among the six companies to be honored with the prestigious award.  The industry-wide Steel Sustainability Champions Programme recognizes worldsteel member companies for their outstanding contribution to sustainability efforts.

According to worldsteel, a combination of several factors helped the company to become selected for the recognition. The company has continued to exhibit continued commitment to worldsteel’s sustainable development charter. ArcelorMittal has been in the forefront in making regular and transparent reporting of its performance against sustainability indicators set forth by the association. In addition, the company has implemented various programmes across sites to improve safety of steelworkers. Incidentally, the company had also won the 2017 Steelie Awards under the ‘Excellence in Sustainability’ category.

Alan Knight, general manager, head of corporate responsibility and sustainable development, ArcelorMittal expressed gratitude to the steel body for recognizing the efforts to make its steel operations safer and more sustainable. The designation will help to provide significant boost to its ongoing efforts. Knight also called for collective efforts from all industry participants towards creation of sustainable steel industry. Meantime, Edwin Basson, Director General of worldsteel said that a sustainable steel industry is crucial for long-term health of economy, society and planet. The industry needs to make further significant progress in sustainability programmes, Basson added.

The other five Steel Sustainability Champions for 2017 are Tata Steel Europe, Tata Steel Limited, Tenaris, thyssenkrupp AG and voestalpine AG.
