ArcelorMittal Europe Commited to First Green Steel Output In 2020

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Luxembourg-based integrated steelmaker ArcelorMittal announced significant progress in technology strategy that is aimed at producing first green steel this year itself. The company aims to deliver its 30% carbon dioxide emissions target by 2030, as part of its journey towards net zero by 2050.

The strategy is based on two main technology routes- the use of hydrogen in DRI electric arc furnaces as well as blast furnaces and the expansion of its Smart Carbon route by making use of hydrogen. As is evident, the key role is played by hydrogen. Accordingly, the company has been developing a number of industrial-scale hydrogen projects for use in blast furnace-based steelmaking and also to test its ability to reduce use of iron ore as a raw material for steelmaking.

ArcelorMittal is currently under the process of developing new facilities for producing green hydrogen using electrolysers. The first large-scale deployment of this technology is being attempted by the teams at ArcelorMittal Bremen in Germany.

Aditya Mittal, President and CEO, ArcelorMittal hoped that the company’s plans to offer greener and more circular steel will support its customers in their circular economy objectives. It looks forward to provide customers with larger volumes of green steel upon rollout of decarbonisation projects across Europe, he added.
