Amazon Hub Locker Sites to Offer Secure Electronics Recycling

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Amazon and ERI have joined hands to offer free drop-off bins for collection of certain categories of electronic waste. As part of the initiative, free recycling bins will be placed at select drop-off locations for consumer electronics.

Amazon has launched the program at selected Hub Locker sites, originally designed for customers to receive their Amazon packages securely, instead of getting them shipped to their residence address. These locations, in partnership with ERI, will now have device drop-off bins, where unwanted electronics could be dropped for secure recycling. The locking hatch mechanism of the collection bin will ensure that devices are not stolen once they are dropped in the bin.

The collected devices will be transported to nearest e-Stewards, R2 and NAID certified ERI sites, where these items will be sorted and recycled for second chance use, after erasing all data on them.

The Hub sites at Austin, Texas; Boston; Chicago; College Park, Md.; Columbus, Ohio; Los Angeles; Lubbock, Texas; Pittsburgh; San Jose, Calif.; and Seattle have been identified as participating Hubs.

The bins will accept audio/video devices, cellphones, tablets, e-readers, connected home devices, laptops, media players and small electronics, regardless of brand. However, the bins won’t accept appliances, loose batteries, light bulbs, hazardous or medical waste, non-electronic material and large electronics.
