SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): At the hearing of the investigation on GHG emissions intensity conducted by the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) held December 7, 2023, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) and the Aluminum Association revealed that recycled content accounts for a substantial portion of aluminum produced in the U.S. This has significantly contributed to reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions, they noted.

According to data presented by ISRI, approximately 80% of U.S. aluminum production makes use of recycle content, which is significantly higher than the average recycled content usage by global production. This underscores the efficiency of the U.S. manufacturing sector. The use of recycled commodities results in annual savings of around 400 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, said Adam Shaffer, Assistant Vice President of International Trade and Global Affairs at ISRI.

Charles Johnson, President and CEO, Aluminum Association also highlighted aluminum’s important role in the green energy transition. Around $10 billion has been spent or committed in building and expanding U.S. aluminum plants over the past ten years, he added.
