Aluminum Industry Urges US Congress to Fast-Track Permitting Reform

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The Aluminum Association has called on the US Congress to advance bipartisan permitting reforms. Moreover, it warns that outdated approval processes could hinder efforts to expand domestic aluminum production and meet rising demand.

In a statement issued October 21, association President and CEO Charles Johnson backed the proposed American Affordability and Jobs Act, introduced by Senators Mike Lee, Martin Heinrich, Shelley Moore Capito and Sheldon Whitehouse. The legislation aims to modernize permitting procedures and accelerate energy and infrastructure projects.

Johnson said regulatory improvements would provide businesses with greater certainty to invest in primary aluminum production, recycling capacity and supporting energy infrastructure. He urged lawmakers to enact the reforms during the current congressional session.

The association launched its “America Needs Aluminum” campaign in September to highlight the metal’s importance to the US economy and promote policies supporting domestic manufacturing and recycling.

Global aluminum demand is projected to increase approximately 80% by 2050. However, the United States currently produces less than 20% of the primary aluminum it consumes annually. Expanding domestic output to meet demand would require an estimated five to six new greenfield smelters, according to the association.

The association stated that permitting reform, combined with investment in energy infrastructure and recycled aluminum, could strengthen U.S. supply chains.
