Aluminum Packaging Recycling Rate Exceeded 2019 Target

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The provisional data published by the UK Environment Agency suggests notable increase in aluminium packaging recycling rate in 2019. The UK Aluminum Can reycling rate had touched record highs in 2018 as well.

According to Aluminum Packaging Recycling Organization (Alupro), the recycling rate for aluminium packaging was 61% during the previous year. A total of 114,748 tonnes were collected, exceeding the 2019 target of 112,200 tonnes. The collected weight represented 15% increase from 2018. Also, Q4 emerged as the strongest quarter of the year, with approximately 34,000 tonnes of aluminium packaging being recycled. It must be noted that the UK has set a higher recycling target of 64% in 2020.

The report noted that a significant volume of Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs) were being raised but not issued. This has led to dramatic increase in PRN prices. Incidentally, the prices had peaked at over £500 per tonne during Q4 last year.

Rick Hindley, Executive Director, Alupro noted that the volumes of aluminium packaging collected and recycled has reported another year of impressive growth. The final figures, due to be published in March this year, is likely to be higher. However, the data indicates that the PRN market continues to remain distorted, he said. Alupro is committed to make further investments to boost aluminium packaging collection and recycling, he added.
