Algoma Steel and USW Signed Agreement  to Extend Contract Deadline

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Algoma Steel Group Inc. announced that it has reached an agreement with the Negotiating Committee of United Steelworkers Local Union 2251 to a fifteen day extension of the collective agreement so as to allow for continued discussions for a new settlement. The fifteen days extension starts from the original expiry date of the contract, ie., 31st July, 2022. As a result, the company has temporarily avoided a strike, which could have started today.

The USW Local Union 2251’s negotiating committee, in a written statement issued Saturday evening noted that one of the key issues regarding cost of living adjustment was addressed. It urged all of its members to report for work as scheduled. Meantime, the news release issued by the leading Canadian steelmaker said that the extension has been agreed for the purpose of continued discussions.

Michael Garcia, President and Chief Executive Officer, Algoma Steel noted that the extension clearly demonstrates the willingness of the parties involved to work towards an agreement that provides fair and equitable improvements to wages and benefits and supports the company’s collective future under the EAF transformation.
