SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alcoa Corporation has announced that the company has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI)- a family of indices that evaluates the sustainability performance of top companies listed on the Dow Jones Global Total Stock Market Index. The company has been named as a mining and metals leader in various categories including environmental performance, corporate governance, risk and crisis management, climate strategy, human capital development and social impact.

Michelle O’Neill, Senior Vice President of Global Government Affairs and Sustainability noted that it is a great achievement for the company to get included in the prestigious index in its first year as an independent company. He reminded that the Alcoa parent company has achieved the honor of getting listed in the index for fifteen years in a row. He dedicated the esteemed inclusion to the ongoing dedication of its employees across the globe. Furthermore, he promised that the company would continue to hold its responsibilities to the environment and to the global community.

The company’s sustainability efforts are based on three pillars- creating sustainable value in communities, enhancing the value of its products and improving the footprint by reducing environmental impacts. As per estimates, Alcoa spent US$6.3 million in community investments during 2016. It also recorded 9,200 employee volunteer hours in the community. In addition, Alcoa also reported US$7.8 billion in purchased goods and services.

The company’s 2016 Sustainability Report shows that it achieved 19% reduction in carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. It also achieved 1% decline in energy intensity. Moreover, 71% of the electricity purchased by the company came from renewable sources. Alcoa achieved 4% uptick in bauxite residue storage efficiency, 12% drop in mercury emissions intensity and 38% reduction in landfilled waste. The area disturbed for mining activities reduced drastically by 14% in 2016. During the year, company’s worldwide operations consumed 405,513 metric tons of scrap. Going forward, the company expects to increase scrap usage significantly, especially at its Warrick aluminum smelter operations.

The increased control and safety mechanisms and revised safety strategy resulted in 58% reduction in reported fatal and serious injury/illness (FSI) events. A total of 269 FSI events, including actual and potential incidents, were recorded in 2016. The total recordable incident rate has dropped by 1% during the year.
