Alcoa Corporation Announces Final Contract Offer at ABI Aluminum Smelter

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alcoa Corporation- the global leader in bauxite, alumina and aluminum products announced that the company has presented a final offer for new labor contract at its Aluminerie de Bécancour Inc. (ABI) smelter in Québec. The final offer will be valid until July 5th.

The rejection of the final offer will force the company to permanently curtail the operations at the smelter facility. If the offer is accepted, the smelter would begin the restart process effective July 26, 2019.

It must be noted that the smelter has been operating at reduced capacity since more than 2.5 years, following rejection of company’s proposed labor contract for hourly employees by members belonging to the United Steelworkers (USW) union.

Two of the three potlines at the smelter facility were curtailed on January 11, 2018. The other potline was being operated by salaried employees. In December 2018, Alcoa announced its decision to immediately begin curtailing half of the one operating potline. Since then, the union and the company management have been involved in extensive negotiations and mediations towards restarting the smelter with a new contract.
