AISI: Steel Import Permits Posted Notable Dip in April

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which indicates notable decline in steel import permit applications during the month of April 2023.

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.292 million net tons in April this year. This is significantly lower by approximately 17.6% when matched with 2.782 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with March 2023 final imports of 2.615 million net tons, the April 2023 steel import permit tonnage was down by 12.4%, AISI data said.

In April this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.928 million net tons, marginally up by 1.1% from the final imports total of 1.906 million net tons in March this year.

Reinforcing Bars reported largest increase in April permits over the prior month, surging higher by 63%. The import permits for hot rolled bars and heavy structural shapes were up by 60% and 57% respectively.

In April 2023, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for Canada. The largest offshore suppliers through the first four months of the current year were Canada, Mexico and Brazil.

The estimated finished steel import market share was 23% was in April and during the initial four-month period of the current year.
